Classification by production method

 

Profiles can be divided into hot-rolled profiles, cold-bent profiles, cold-rolled profiles, cold-drawn profiles, extruded profiles, forged profiles, hot-bent profiles, welded profiles and special rolled profiles according to their production methods.

 

Classification by cross-sectional characteristics

 

Profiles can be divided into simple cross-sectional profiles and complex cross-sectional profiles according to their cross-sectional shapes. Simple cross-sectional profiles have symmetrical cross-sections, relatively uniform shapes and simple shapes, such as round steel, wire rods, square steel and lock steel. Complex cross-sectional profiles are also called special cross-sectional profiles, which are characterized by obvious convex and concave branches in the cross-section. Therefore, they can be further divided into flange profiles, multi-step profiles, wide and thin profiles, locally specially processed profiles, irregular curve profiles, composite profiles, periodic cross-sectional profiles and metal wires, etc.

 

Classification by use sector

 

Profiles are classified by use sector into railway profiles (rails, fish plates, turnout rails, wheels, wheel hoops), automotive profiles (rims, tire retaining rings and lock rings), shipbuilding profiles (L-shaped steel, bulb flat steel, Z-shaped steel, ship window frame steel), structural and construction profiles (H-shaped steel, I-shaped steel, channel steel, angle steel, crane rails, window and door frame materials, steel sheet piles, etc.), mining steel (U-shaped steel, channel steel, mining I-shaped steel, scraper steel, etc.), and special profiles for machinery manufacturing.

 

Classification by cross-sectional size

 

Profiles can be divided into large, medium and small profiles according to their cross-sectional size. The classification is usually based on whether they are suitable for rolling on large, medium and small rolling mills respectively. The distinction between large, medium and small is not actually strict. Another method is to use unit weight (kg/m) to distinguish. It is generally believed that small-sized materials have a unit weight of less than 5 kg/m, medium-sized materials have a unit weight of 5 to 20 kg/m, and large-sized materials have a unit weight of more than 20 kg/m.
