1. Control Mode Switching
This refers to switching between ISO mode and H pattern mode.
It is commonly required when:
A different operator takes over the machine and prefers another control layout;
The operator wants to change the control logic to match their own operating habits.
2. Joystick Physical Adjustment and Calibration
This involves adjusting the joystick position and mechanical condition, such as:
Joystick height being too high or too low;
Uncomfortable forward/backward angle;
Incorrect spacing between left and right joysticks;
Joystick not returning to the neutral position after release;
Machine drifting or failing to travel straight.
3. Sensitivity and Response Adjustment
This adjustment is used to improve operating smoothness and control precision, especially for problems such as:
Sudden or aggressive movements;
Bucket shaking;
Poor low-speed or fine-control performance.
Differences Between ISO Mode and H Pattern Mode
ISO Mode
In ISO mode, the left joystick controls travel functions, while the right joystick controls attachment operations.
Left Joystick:
Push forward → Move forward
Pull backward → Move backward
Move left/right → Steering control
Right Joystick:
Push forward/backward → Boom raising and lowering
Move left/right → Bucket curl and dump functions
ISO mode is the default configuration on many modern skid steer loaders. Its control logic is similar to an excavator, making it easier for new operators to learn.
H Pattern Mode
In H pattern mode, each joystick controls one side of the tracks or wheels.
Travel Control:
Push both joysticks forward → Straight travel
Push one joystick forward and the other backward → Counter-rotation / zero-radius turning
Boom and bucket functions are controlled through joystick side movements or foot pedals, depending on the machine configuration.
Experienced operators, especially those performing precision pallet handling, often prefer H pattern mode because it provides a more direct and responsive operating feel.
How to Switch Control Modes on Electro-Hydraulic Models
First, keep in mind:
Only electronic-control skid steer loaders equipped with a display screen and mode selection switch can switch between ISO and H modes.
Older machines with purely mechanical linkage controls cannot change control modes. The original factory setting remains unchanged.
Switching Procedure:
Step 1: Prepare the Machine
Park the machine on level ground;
Fully lower the boom to the ground;
Reduce engine speed to idle.
Then press the OPERATE button or engage the parking brake to disable travel and hydraulic functions.
The parking brake indicator should illuminate.
Step 2: Check the AUX Roller Position
Make sure the AUX auxiliary hydraulic roller switch on the right joystick is in the neutral position.
This is one of the most common reasons why operators cannot switch control modes. If the AUX switch is not centered, the control system may prevent the mode change.
Step 3: Select ISO or H Mode
Press and hold the ISO/H mode selection switch for several seconds.
A successful switch is usually confirmed by one of the following:
A warning beep or confirmation sound;
A change on the display screen;
The selected mode indicator light turning on.
The switch location depends on the manufacturer and model. It may be located:
On the right joystick control panel;
On the front-right side of the cab;
Below the parking brake switch.
Step 4: Restore Operation
Press the OPERATE button again to reactivate hydraulic functions.
Before starting normal work, perform several slow test movements to confirm that the control direction matches your expectations.
Physical Adjustment of Joysticks
Mechanical joystick systems usually allow adjustment in several areas.
Before adjustment:
Shut down the engine;
Turn off electrical power;
Prepare the necessary hand tools.
1. Left and Right Joystick Spacing
When both joysticks are in the neutral position, there should be a comfortable operating gap between them.
If the joysticks are too close together or too far apart, operator comfort and control accuracy may be affected.
Adjustment Procedure:
Loosen the locking nut.
Turn the adjustment screw:
Clockwise → Move the joystick outward;
Counterclockwise → Move the joystick inward.
Tighten the locking nut after adjustment.
Adjust both sides gradually. Avoid completely locking one side before balancing the other side.
2. Front-to-Back Joystick Alignment
If the two joysticks are not aligned when stationary:
Loosen the mounting bolts.
Move both joysticks forward or backward until they are aligned.
Tighten the bolts securely.
Proper alignment helps maintain a consistent hand position during long operating periods.
3. Joystick Height Adjustment
Most joystick assemblies provide two mounting height positions.
Adjustment method:
Remove the mounting bolts.
Move the joystick assembly to the alternative mounting holes.
Reinstall and tighten the bolts.
Select the position that provides a natural wrist and arm posture for the operator.
4. Neutral Return and Machine Tracking Problems
After releasing the joystick, it should automatically return to the neutral position.
If:
The joystick does not return to center;
The machine moves by itself after the joystick is released;
The machine does not travel straight even when both joysticks are pushed fully forward;
the issue is usually not caused by joystick positioning.
Possible causes include:
Linkage misalignment or wear;
Return spring problems;
Hydraulic pump neutral calibration errors.
These adjustments require professional calibration and are generally recommended to be handled by an authorized service technician.
